The Mummers Parade

It wouldn’t be the start of a new year without taking in a little bit of The Mummers Parade.

Mummers Day Parade

It might be the most bizarre/creepy event in Philadelphia. Adult men dressed in drag and highly intoxicated?

We got to the parade slightly late and it was already really crowded and hard to see. This is when having a boyfriend proves useful.

Thanks for the boost dudes.

It started to get cold and chilly. Just like normal people, Juli and I decided to share her boyfriend Adam’s giant gloves.

Like I said, totally normal.

Since we arrived late we actually got to watch some of the better floats and costumes.

2011 was a pretty good year, but I always like fresh starts. I also like to set really dumb resolutions like “this year I will clean the litterbox everyday.” Yeah not gonna happen.

I was thinking back on my favorite memories though and picked my top 3.

1. Our trip to Belgium and Amsterdam. This trip ruled for many reasons, notably that we tried almost 90 different beers in 1 week and went to the cat museum!

2. Training for and finishing the Marine Corps Marathon. I really struggled at the beginning of training and wasn’t sure if I would make it. It ended up being one of the happiest days of my life and the first time I have felt like a superstar athlete.

3. And then finishing the Philadelphia Marathon. Running 2 marathons in 3 weeks is kind of stupid, but I looooved the Philly marathon and might run it again this year.

i agree with the bizarre/creepy nature of it. at least the vaudevillains have infused a small vibe of freshness the last couple of years, but it’s still not enough to hold my interest. idk, as a non-native, maybe i’ll never get it. 😛

  2. That parade looks like a blast! I love the robots. Now I’m off to find your post about the cat museum. So sorry so catlady.
