Almost Time…

20121114-134552.jpgI thought a picture of my favorite rescued greyhound, Oliver, wearing my cycling hat was the most appropriate photo to talk about marathon training!

The Philadelphia Marathon is on Sunday so I wanted to write some thoughts about the marathon and wrap up my training.

I AM SO EXCITED. I think that is the best way to describe my feelings right now. I love Philadelphia so much. Like I want to give it a big hug everyday when I ride my bike to work. I never know how to describe my feelings for this city to others, it’s a weird city to be in love with.

And then when the marathon opened up 3k spots for displaced NYC Marathon runners, but heart grew even bigger. NYC would never open up spots for anyone, and as soon as the NYC Marathon was canceled our mayor offered to put on a marathon the next day.

So I am going into this with a big ol’ crush on the city and I am ready to run all over it.

Physically, I am feeling pretty ok. I didn’t train as hard as I hoped, but I ran more miles than I have ever run before. I had some solid long runs and some solid mid-week 10 milers. My legs are stronger than ever and I think they will be ok carrying me those last few miles.

Week 13 – PEAK WEEK. This week went great! I ran the most miles EVER in a week and felt good the entire time.
M: 5.5 miles on the treadmill
T: 10 miles along Kelly
W: 10 miles along Kelly
T: 5 miles on the treadmill
F: Rest
S: 19.5 miles
This was supposed to be 20 but I messed up my mileage along the route and didn’t really feel like trying to make up 0.5 miles by running around my neighborhood.
S: Rest
Most rewarding rest day of the entire training cycle.

Total: 50 miles

Week 14 – Even though this was the start of the taper it didn’t really feel like it because of the long-ish mid-week run and the 15 miler on Saturday.
M: Rest
T: 6 miles on the treadmill
W: 9 miles along Kelly Drive
Getting excited about the marathon!
T: 5 miles easy
F: Rest
S: 15 miles
It was cold outside! I put on layers expecting to peel them off but I stayed bundled the entire time. Nothing remarkable about this run, not really bad, but not great.
S: Rest

Total: 35 miles

Week 15 – Kind of gross weather all week so I mostly ran on the treadmill. Took it overall pretty easy.
M: 6 miles on the treadmill
T: Rest
W: 6 miles on the treadmill
T: 6 miles on the treadmill
F: Rest
S: 10 miles, easy
I just tried to hold a relatively easy and steady pace and was pretty successful.
S: Rest

Total: 28 miles

Week 16 – Go time. I’m ready. I’m excited. My knee hurts but I am trying not to think about that.
M: Rest
T: Ran 4
W: Rest
T: Rest
F: Will run 3 miles
S: Rest
S: MARATHON

Total: 33.2!

I hope you have a great race! And I hadn’t heard about them offering spots to NYC runners- Philly is obviously the best :)
